Aurora photographers Susana Raab and Scott Goldsmith are currently featured as a two-person exhibition in the New Works Gallery at the Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The New Works Gallery is a space for Silver Eye members to exhibit their recent work, rotating each month, to keep members and visitors informed of contemporary trends in the field.
In Susana Raab’s portion of the exhibition, entitled Consumed, her images expose the fast food industry’s often unseen consequences on our health and the environment, along with their intrusive advertising campaigns. “Americans are slaves to an industry whose influence over our society we do not fully comprehend. And we abet this national drama through the worship of the signs and totems of this junk food culture, proving the efficacy of the billions spent on fast food related advertising”, says Susana. For this series, she used a medium-format film to achieve more saturated colors, portraying the hyper-reality of this industry’s advertising conventions.
In Scott Goldsmith’s portion of the exhibition, entitled Political, his photographs depict moments and stories in the world of American politics, including the recent inauguration of President Obama, that are only seen first hand. “I have been blessed and lucky to travel with US Presidents and presidential candidates. It was during these assignments that I became fascinated by what the public did not see in the nightly TV news cast”, says Goldsmith. “It is the amazing experiences we are allowed to witness just because we have a camera or a plastic credential”. In the future, Scott hopes to turn his ongoing project into a book.
